Would the Study and Use of Martial Arts be Invaluable if an outbreak occured?
Martial Arts Vs. Zombies?!
I am new here, so i don't need anyone else going on and on about how this is a BS thread I'm posting, I'm just continuing what someone else started( http://zombieapocalypsecollaboration.ning.com/forum/topics/zombie-effective-martial-arts ) in the old board.
Martial arts can be used in extreme situations when out of ammo, or using stealth to avoid detection, in the thread posted in the link above they talk about boxing a lot, but what about Judo, Jujitsu, Karate, Ninjutsu, and about 3000 years of other martial arts developed around the world, including one from India ( i cant remember the name of it off the top of my head ) that to attain Master, you have to kill a Bull with a single bunch, i don't think any thing is standing in your way if you can achieve this level of skill.
Judo can be used to throw and trip your enemies to the ground, giving you room to run like hell.
Jujitsu and ninjutsu can both be used to fold your enemy up giving you access to those vital spots such as the base of the skull to sever the brain from the spinal cord with a knife.
Karate has a kick that a lot of people have forgotten about ( no thanks to Chuck Norris and his round-house ) called a front thrust kick which allows you to push your target a pretty good distance from you, maybe knocking others over behind it in the process and escape.
this advantages of martial arts is really boundless, including the weapon based martial arts that would allow you to be even deadlier to the undead, especially if your scouting a city or township on your own. I am hoping that there are other martial artists out there that would be willing to help me expand on this list so that way others will become interested and possibly study martial arts themselves in the event of something happening. Besides, if you study martial arts and get healthy, you wont be one of those fat people with 0 Cardio, rule #1, never forget it.

I don't think you'll get much use out of the martial arts themselves besides just being fit. and I'm talking against Zombies, not post apoc in general. If you're close enough to them to resort to unarmed combat you're pretty fucked anyways as it is your best bet is to run like hell, not try to hit them. Remember they aren't exactly gonna be fighting you, or in defensive positions, they would likely be attempting to get body fluids on you in the form of blood, bites, spit...with absolutely no regards to their safety, so they'll probably get a bite in

Actually, I think martial arts would be effective in defending against zeds to some extent. Throwing them off or otherwise incapacitating them while you are unable to use weapons against them could save your life.
I'll agree that it isn't effective in completely eliminating them, though, and it would be best to avoid any situation where you would need to fight a zed close up and unarmed.

I think it would be useful for getting out of some tough situation. Joint manipulation and basics of fighting could help you but fighting with any weapon even a 2 by 4 would be a better choice.

I concur, even cheap aluminum broomsticks from dollar stores would give you a major advantage over bare-handed martial arts especially in a shambler scenario. for the 2x4 thing, if I had time and material it just dawned on me now that bolting on some handles onto the flat face of it would give me that bumper-personal barricade and battery device good for dealing with small crowds of shamblers or 1-3 ragers, of course this is just in my head with no actual practicality put behind it yet.

too much effort for MSpaint(means I'm no good at it), basically just take a pair of those steel bolt-on door pulls you see on homemade backyard shed doors, barns and whatnot and bolt them onto the flat face of a 2x4, kinda like a redneck bumper but the grips being like 2.5-3 feet apart on a 3.5-5 length of 2x4 so you can shove forward knockin back/down zeds but with 6-8 inches of length on each end from the ends of the grips on the 2x4 so you can smash'n'bash brains

Re: Martial Arts Vs. Zombies?!
YES! like that premise but with the handles on the 4inch wide side instead of on the 2 inch edge of the 2x4
Auto's drawing adds to it too in a way now that I think about it, having sharpened bolts or spikes facing out from the opposite side of the handles to puncture eye-sockets/skulls (THANKS MONSTER!!)

dont worry genju, i immediately knew what you were trying to explain. you could put a really sharp pizza cutter on the end. (the big rocking-chair ones they use at mazzios, not a little one with a wheel)
