Gun policy in your region

Post  Trader on Mon Feb 22, 2010 10:00 am

Most of you being American, it's interesting to compare gun policies around the globe and I am particularly interested in the differences between different states' gun policies. Is it legal to own full-automatic firearms in the US? Complete bans on weapons somewhere in the US? Could I buy and use a M14 EBR 7.62x51mm by myself if I moved to the US? Tell us something about the gun policy in your region.

Lately the Finnish gun policy has taken some serious turns after the two linked school-shooting incidents few years back, namely they're considering to make a law to ban all semi-automatic firearms in Finland; yes, even hand guns. Being concerned about a possible outbreak of some kind, I'm now even more concerned for my safety when I'd be needing a firearm, but I can't get one. "To obtain a firearms license, an individual must declare a valid reason to own a gun. Acceptable reasons include hunting, sports or hobby shooting, profession related, show or promotion or exhibition, collection or museum, souvenir, and signalling. It is worth noticing that self- or home defence are not considered valid reasons".

Discuss gun policies in relation to their impact on the situation at a possible outbreak (not just the zombie-kind, but the post-apocalyptic kind of collapse of societal infrastructure too).

In California our gun laws are a bit more then most states. If your 18 you can buy a long gun and I think it's 21 to buy a pistol. As far as what kind of gun we have an assault weapons ban that list a bunch of features that make a gun an assault weapon such as larger then 10 round magazine or full auto. Also 50 caliber weapons are banned unless you owned them before the law was enacted. I think you can get a permit to own a "assault weapon" in CA but I'm not familiar with the process to get one. On a national level I know you can apply for a a permit to own a Sub machine gun and I assume a assault rifle from the ATF. There's a inspection of your firearm storage, a background check, and agreeing to the inspection of you firearm storage by authorized ATF personnel at any time. Plus an annual tax of $200 I think.
