Bags, discussion on what kind of bags are good.

Post  Dan Champion on Sat Nov 07, 2009 2:27 am

For like B.O.B., or just general backpacking, or you know, whatever. even how to make bags or other uses idfk.
Here's one to start with, this bag bought is flipping expensive, but it looks like it could be made on the cheap.

Its made of recycled tires, so if I had something to cut tires with I'm pretty sure I could replicate the pattern.

thats actually pretty cool.
It's light enough to carry on the run,
it's made of tires so it wont restrict movement, and if you fall on it, it wouldn't cause damage,
and it looks pretty difficult to grab.

good point. I think most z's would probably go with the top-down grab, which would slip right off.

using tires makes me slightly concerned about weight. a 10 pound bag doesn't feel that heavy but it's 10 less pounds of useful stuff.

Idk, with the size of it, and the amount of tire used I don't think it will weigh too much, actually if making one of my own I would probably use something lighter but sturdy. some sort of plastic

Reminds me of those black beachball soldier drones from the Crystal Shard movie.
About making these at home, i bet these are precision-shaved or heat-formed to offset weight issues, i'll wait for Toobe's results

One of the problems with backpacks is getting them off in a hurry. The military used to issue the medium and large ALICE packs with quick release straps, once you used one enough times you could literally drop the whole thing in one second. It would be easy to adapt the straps to a different non-military pack if someone wanted to and they can be purchased on-line for reasonable prices. For long term use though you can't beat a military surplus pack. I have a medium ALICE pack I've using since 1975 and it's still going strong.

used to have an ALICE pack too, when I lived on Ft. Drum I used to get tonnes of surplus, the packs did last awhile but now that i do a ton of minimal/survival camping/hiking i just stick to a single-strap messenger bag with a quick release clip sewn right into it. Don't know if you're pouring over all the old threads but one other thing I talked about before with packs is keepin major essentials of survival in a small pack on the pack something flat and and light including contents and everything else like clothes and shit in something like a duffel bag to use as a drop-bag style so you can literally drop right from the hand and skedaddle/hide/fight while still keepin the bare but rare and truly needed material right on your back in case you can't go back for those clothes you dropped that can be replaced.

Excellent idea and one I fully agree with. A "layered system" always seems to work best whether its clothing in inclement weather or even the equipment you might carry with you during a SHTF scenario. It sounds as though the younger folks are getting some sage advice here.
