Communication without internet.
How are we gonna do it? Once it goes out what are we lost? Of course those of us near each other can meet up at a HQ, but what about across country? I know of know radio system that long range. Is there a way to get the internet back up? (maybe through some sort of satellite internet provider we can direct connect to a central server that would allow us to use a text based chat?

I thought I read all of that, isn't the first post delivery pigeons followed by like 5 posts of Mario, then talk about hijacking a satellite. Rest of thread is all about hobosigns. No none of that helps me

Re: Communication without internet.
Hey I see that Satellite phone idea, that's a good idea but who can pay that much for one and it can only contact other sat phones. Also are they subscription based or one tome?
Edit: "The cost of making calls from a satellite phone varies from around $0.15 to $2 per minute" That means someone regulates it which means once power is out, so is this. Scrap that whole idea.

Re: Communication without internet.
There's talk of hamradio too I believe and other things.
Here's my thoughts on the subject, We'll keep using communication systems that are intact while they last, simultaneously setting up a network of communication, most likely Ham Radio thingys, or securing cellphone towers, I am not sure. I don't know a lot about communication but I think those Nextell Phones with the 2 way talking deal use satelites to talk to various phones.

Re: Communication without internet.
If we setup repeaters then we can probably ensure we can get clear long range communications through on at least one frequency.

I'm cool with ham radios. How far do they reach?

Re: Communication without internet.
But hey, Shortwave radios can talk country to country. In the U.S. and Canada, no license is required to own or operate a shortwave receiver. If we could get our hands on out own, we wouldn't need to pay a station to rent their frequency. so a one time cost. If we could get one in every HQ that would be awesome. I think this is better then the satphone eh?
