Re: Organization
Well, it would certainly be more plausible that they would be self sufficient after a while, not immediately.

Re: Organization
The majority of people today aren't even self-sufficient. They don't know how to replace a window, make a door, cook, start a fire or any survivalist techniques. Really only those that have to repair there own clothes because they don't have enough money to replace them and people in that pay grade know how to survive by themselves. And then you have o factor in the panic. Their neighbors and friends and family are being eaten or trampled by panicking crowds. Society and civilization as they know it are crumbling and the city they live in is turning to ashes around them. Buildings are on fire and the opportunists among us are shooting and looting as they please. You can hear sirens as they blare all around you and your city. Many people who have gone to war do no recover from shell-shock and the horrors they have seen. Now apply that to the population of Canada or the U.S.A. or the earth. The process of rebuilding society will be slow going and it will be up to those of us who have prepared and the quick thinkers to create order out of the chaos.

Re: Organization
Exactly, so this is why I say it is more plausible for them to learn self sufficiency and effective community participation later, not right after a zompocalypse.
I get what you mean about us needing to take charge and have a strong presence, and I'm sure that won't be a problem. If it is, hell, after all our thinking and strategizing, I believe that'll be a case in point of social darwinism

Re: Organization
True that they should learn self-sufficiency. I never argued the fact. But I group of confident people who create the illusion that they know what they are doing (whether or not we do; hopefully we do) gives people in our rebuilding community the feeling of safety and security which ensures a smoother running society. People see hope and feel safe in the light of stability.

Confidence and order will give people more hope than anything.

Since we all decided on Operator as a good rank, perhaps we have found the perfect place for it

Probably not if the person in question was all about gathering info on any zombies or other humans in the area.

To hell with Sheriff, lets go with Gunslinger!
More specifically, in the style of Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

Dark Tower series is almost nothing like the rest of his stuff. I suggest you give it a shot.

Re: Organization
Just thinking out loud here but since we all want ranks but many of us are skeptical as to what message will be sent out if we go for something too military then perhaps something more akin to law enforcement. it would tie in with that whole "sheriff" thing mentioned a few posts back and we could probably work "operator" in somewhere as well.
Any thoughts?

Re: Organization
While I agree with the different path (sorta, I've always like the sound of military ranks but I see the practicality) we should use something other than sheriff. Even in towns that have sheriffs, are they actually taken seriously? I think it's like putting a sign on your head and saying "Laugh at me and think I'm crazy". How about guardian, steward, honourable, marshal and later we could call offensive squad leaders 'huntsmasters'. Much later for that one though. It would send the message that we are hunting the zombies and they WILL be eradicated and eviscerated. Maybe even defenestrated (for those that don't know this actually means to be thrown out a window, so if your sibling ever annoys you threaten to defenestrate him).
