Food Sources
I was thinking the other day of places people will not immediately go to loot food, here is a list.
Restaurant Freezers- Every restaraunt has a freezer, some have multiple ones for keeping the next days prep supplies close at hand, Even with the power out these become just like portable coolers and will keep things cold and usable for at least 2 days without anyone poking around or opening the door. However, if the food isn't in boxes the ones on the outside of the pile or stack or whatever will probably be completely thawed if not rotted, so be sure to take from the middle of the pile if thats suspected, bags and packages inside card board boxes will keep longer, but taking the middles is still probably your best choice for nonspoiled food.
Food Pantries- Every city has one, usually they are in the basement of churches and in salvation army buildings, typically you can find a few months worth of food already packaged and ready for delivery, things like canned meats and vegitables mostly, also mixes that you have to just add water to, I even got one with MRE packages in it once at the one in Beverly Ohio. Since its canned it won't spoil and they have freezers that they keep what has to remain cold in, they will probably start to thaw in a day after power goes out.
Refrigerated Tractor Trailers- Kinda hit and miss, it could be completely empty for example, or it could have a bunch of corpses in the back that some nut job decided keeping them cool would be good for science experiments so be careful, also the driver may be inside it cowering in fear with a shotgun aimed at you. These refrigerated trailers are easy to spot, they look just like regular ones but have a large contraption between the truck part and the trailer part affixed to the trailer with lots of vents and tubes and the like, they are made to keep food cold so spoilege isn't an issue, the only real problem would be moving it to a secure location for unloading without a driver or keys

I'll probably get most of my food from rodents and looting, thanks Period juice. I think alot of other people will realize about these places too though and loot the hell out of em'.

Re: Food Sources
Well for me I plan on becoming mostly a hunter/gatherer when Z-Day hits. Granted I will loot and try to get as many spices as I can, and maybe the odd canned food every once and a while. I might try to grow a few small crops (like potato's) but that'd be it.

Re: Food Sources
I would have to grow peppers whats the one thing no one will think of taking to that island or deserted area.............flavor you'll get sick of flavorless meat and rats all the time so when you're rushing to leave grab some salt and pepper and seeds if you have any, also my mother has a plant that if you brak open it has a liquid that heals burn very handy.

Re: Food Sources
Well you better get good with names. If Z-Day hits and you're forced out of the city and into a forest, how would you know what to eat?

you don't eat aloe i know that much lol
another plant that has value in the wilds is the Cattail, it has a tuber-root like a potato, a little bitter and crispier then a potato but can be cooked the same way as a spud.

Re: Food Sources
Well not so much eating Aloe Vera but a basic knowledge of wild edibles can't hurt anyone. Even if you don't plan on going into the wild it could be worth your life to do it.

Re: Food Sources
I watched a survival show once where this guy drank a concoction of grasses and bark and whatnot and called it "bush Tea" I wonder if its specific vegitation or just whatever and the boiling makes it not/less poisonous.
My cousin and I tried cat tails when we were younger and wandering in the woods, little did we know that the edible part is under the ground/water and so we ate the fiberous brown knob at the end ahh to be like 10 again.

Re: Food Sources
Yes, alot of average plants can be boiled for their nutrients just like Dandelion Tea (Make sure you DO KNOW what is toxic in your region because YOU CAN still poison yourself) and don't you people waste those watermelon rinds!! Thats where all the Vitamins and Minerals are in a watermelon and the fiber is good for you too even raw.
<-- Haahaahaa! Thats funny. Don't feel bad, when I was 5-6 I used to eat pebbles and lithium batteries...periodjuice wrote:I watched a survival show once where this guy drank a concoction of grasses and bark and whatnot and called it "bush Tea" I wonder if its specific vegitation or just whatever and the boiling makes it not/less poisonous.

Re: Food Sources
Never eat seagulls. Though I'm not sure if it's natural, or just what they eat, their flesh tastes like the most godawful thing this side of hell's asshole. You will not be able to stomach it.
